fall
and autumn are used on both sides of the Atlantic as the name for the third season of the year, although in everyday use autumn is standard in BrE and fall in AmE. Fall is a shortening of the phrase fall of the year or fall of the leaf, and was in British use from the 16c until about 1800. The word autumn dates from the 14c, and comes from Latin autumnus, but the ultimate origin is obscure.
